JK Group – The Young Ones Album Launch

JK Group launch their seminal album, The Young Ones, and invite Steady Weather to the party to celebrate. Originally released amid the global pandemic which caused the launch gig and national tour to be cancelled, the album still made waves being featured on Bandcamp Weekly, and picking up a nomination for the Best Jazz Album at Music Victoria Awards 2020.

The music sits in the crossover of raw, live jazz and electronic/dance production. At times synth-heavy, effected and soundscapey, while at other times hard hitting groove laden with spiritual jazz overtones and no-holds-barred improvising. The group nods respectfully to classic jazz traditions, whilst at the same time carves a path that unashamedly looks towards the future, taking on modern influences and production techniques.

For this extra special gig, JK Group will be expanded to a full 6 piece line up for the first time, featuring an expanded collection of Melbourne’s best musicians with the addition of Erica Tucceri on flute (Z*F*E*X, WVR BVBY, Billy Davis) and the return of Lewis Moody (now based in London) on keys.

A year has passed since The Young Ones was released, and in that time we’ve all lived a few lifetimes. The music themed around growth and change has more relevance than ever, and gives us all the more reason to finally celebrate its release.

“Part synth-inspired, part spiritual jazz-inspired, there’s really very little else to compare this progressive and bold sonic soundscape with. 4/5”

– UK Vibe

“Incredible Cosmic Jazz Debut”

– Beat Caffeine

“An excellent coming of age record”

– Bandcamp

The music is new in the refreshing approach that blurs the line between jazz & electronic music. This is unapologetically a jazz album first and foremost, but that doesn’t mean those wanting to express themselves to the music on the dancefloor will be disappointed. Where many albums who dare try and merge these elements often fall short, Josh Kelly’s efforts here are absolutely triumphant. * * * * *
